In recent years, adult and community education in the United Kingdom has become more important, especially in urban areas. However, not much is known about lifelong learning for people in the rural areas. This article looks at the learning needs of rural communities by reporting on a study undertaken by Learning Choices, a community education provider for rural Northumberland. This research study investigated the barriers to learning and how to ensure that learning activities really get delivered to the local people. The article outlines how information was gathered for the study and reports that the diverse nature of rural communities led to a whole spectrum of needs, issues and circumstances being raised. This makes it difficult to implement a nationwide approach and the authors outline a number of changes that need to be developed if the future of rural adult learning is to succeed. Show less
